Is Analects really so great?

Many people have heard of the book The Analects of Confucius. So, what kind of book is the Analects of Confucius? Simply put, the Analects of Confucius is a dialogue between the great sage Confucius and his disciples, which is the chat record of the sage. Of course, the saints talk, not parents, not star gossip, they talk about learning, talk about ideals, talk about self-improvement, talk about governance, talk about all the topics that gentlemen care about. It can be said that most of the essence of Confucius' thought and doctrine are concentrated in this book.

Thoughtful students may find that the "theory" of the Analects is clearly the "theory" of discussion, but why not read the second sound and read the fourth sound? This should start from the origin of the book of the Analects.

Although the Analects of Confucius mainly records the words of Confucius, it was not written by Confucius himself. According to the explanation of "Han Shu Yi Wen Zhi", the Analects of Confucius was edited by his disciples and his disciples after his death, and the so-called "Analects" means "the compilation of words", which is the "sayings of saints" edited by Confucius's disciples and grandchildren. Now the prevailing "Analects of Confucius" a total of 20, more than 11,000 words, each take the first two or three words as the title, that is, everyone sees "learning and" "for politics" "Gongyechang" and so on.

Confucius is known as the "sage of the time", is the "master" among the saints, so he is also respected as "the most sage teacher", which is the reason why the main hall in the Confucius Temple is entitled "Hall of Great success". Confucius is the only one who can get the title of "Dacheng" in Chinese history. The Analects of Confucius, as a classical book recording the words of sages, has been valued since the Song Dynasty and is a compulsory subject in the ancient imperial examinations. The examiner often draws a sentence or a few words from it as the topic of the proposition essay.

The ancients have a saying that "half the Analects rule the world". It is said that Zhao Pu, the prime minister of the Song Dynasty, was proud of his life, and as a successful person, he admitted when sharing his successful experience that he did not read other books, and all knowledge came from the Analects of Confucius. During the war, he used "half the Analects to rule the world"; In peacetime, he also used "half the Analects to govern peace". "Analects of Confucius" function is not big, look at the prime minister Zhao as the Song dynasty CEO, marry Bai Fumei, to the peak of life example is enough.

However, if you have normal intelligence and the spirit of independent thinking, after reading through the Analects of Confucius, you will have doubts: can Confucius and his disciples really govern the country well with these fragments of words?

Du Fu has a poem, "children's learning ends in the Analects of Confucius", which means that the Analects is a textbook for children's enlightenment. The truth always catches you off guard. What most people think of as the Confucian "Bible" turns out to be only entry-level reading. Of course, the primer does not mean that the Analects is not important. In fact, the Analects is concise and comprehensive, profound philosophy, many sentences have become deeply popular aphorisms, such as "do not do to others what you do not want to do", "think twice before you act", "haste makes waste" and so on.

A close reading of the Analects of Confucius, although it can not "rule the world", has a good guiding effect on our understanding of traditional culture, especially on self-cultivation, learning and life.
